Posted: 21 October 2015
Tuesday October 20, 2015, post officers and members of the William E. Dillard American Legion - Post 104 entered into a lease agreement with the Jackson County Commissioners for occupancy of the former Jackson County Rescue Squad building located on West Main Street in Sylva, NC. The American Legion will occupy a portion of the building that requires a secure location for post activities, whereas other areas of the building will be available to the community for various meetings.
Presently, renovation plans are in the preliminary stages however, the American Legion - Post 104 could be conducting activities in the facility by the end of the year. This new location is key to the American Legions’ plan to complete a veteran’s concept of patriotism that will welcome everyone to Sylva.
Plans for the area also include a Charters of Freedom Center that will house replicas of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Fund raising for those portions of the park should commence sometime in November 2015. The long-term plan involves the addition of a walking path to connect the veteran’s park area to the war memorials adjacent to the old Jackson County Courthouse, the Bi-Centennial Park, and the Memorial Fountain.
